Walk Off: h(y)r vs. Black Lodges

I've been going back and forth with Steven at Black Lodges for a couple months on a lot of things, but one of the ideas we are doing on Black Lodges is "It's a walk off!" I have to fully give Steven credit for the title. It definitely keeps the tone casual and pretty funny, which is really the vibe at BL. This is the outfit I came up with as my Winter to Spring look. It's layered enough to keep you warm, but incorporates some of the lighter tones and shades that you should be wearing this spring. What I found pretty funny was that both of our looks we're pretty similar, and both of them are more or less what we are wearing on any given day. Anyways, the intro is worth a read and it should be fun to see the website develop over at BL in the next little while.Walk off - Round 1

I love the hat. I wear it all the time my self out here in the cold swedish winter.
In sweden we call it the "Palme hat", after an old prime minister.
Nice outfit. I been on the look out for some washed denim. I usually keep it dark denim and I get nervous about distressed jeans but those J Crew's look pretty comfy and versatile
i like his redwings better than yours and love the monocle bag, but overall I think you win and everything I see from our legacy is pretty great.
First round to h(y)r! Sorry Rob, gotta disagree with you on the Redwings, the round toe boot beats the chukka every time.
well considering mr vogel's has all come from the garbstore shop courtesy of his mate its hardly worth commenting on
dang. hate to say it, but steven's porter bag is the shiz. don't hate me!
Sorry, you can do better than that. 1)Redwings are trendy as hell. 2) I doubt the socks and the hat would match perfectly.3)All these pieces may not be by Jcrew but they certainly look like it. WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE. Do your self a favor and WALK OFF THE BANDWAGON. I just finished putting together outfits with one of the nominees of GQ's American Designer of the Year (I won't say who). I think we are both going to have to agree that what you have here is boring, with slight undertones of immaturity. Even your butt buddies at Shipley and Halmos would most likely agree. What we have here is a page from a Jcrew catalogue. You need to start acquiring your own taste Ryan, because right now, you seem like a teenage girl who wants everything she sees in her favorite company's magazine.
^ The idea wasn't to come up with some crazy outfit that I don't want to wear, or style somebody for a special event. This is the shit I wear daily and how I would ideally put it together, or do for that matter.
I've been wearing Redwings for a year and half now and I don't care if they are trendy or not trendy, they fit great and look awesome, those are 2 good reasons to wear them I think. And for being so trendy I don't see anybody other than friends of mine wearing them.
J Crew is far from my favorite company as well. They make cheap items that are great for filling the gaps in your wardrobe for good prices. I've actually never even seen their catalog. On the other hand, I do want everything in the Engineered Garments catalog. But there aren't too many teenage girls that are into EG all that much I don't think.
ps h(y)r collective is my favorite magazine. Weird how I do like everything in it...
Everyone else, thanks for the comments, the funny part of a 'outfit battle' is these aren't dressed up outfits, this is what I wear and what Steven was actually wearing today I'm pretty sure. And his bag does beat mine...
Well, lets just say those are some pretty dressed up everyday clothes (khaki blazer, button down, and vest?). And redwings are not comfortable unless you break them in. That is why they cost twice as much in certain vintage stores for a used pair. I'm glad you and all your friends wear redwings together, and you don't see anyone else wear them. That is the perk to living in Canada I suppose. Why don't you take a trip to NYC or LA and reevaluate that statement. Those two cities are actual fashion hubs, which do not exist in Canada. Every cheap ass shoe store you see in these cities carries Red Wings now; probably because everyone has caught on to the fact that they are trendy, except you of course. Other boots do exist Bubble Boy.
Since this is your ideal daily outfit, I suppose the clashing red colors is a favorite of yours? You could have used just about any other color of sock and it wouldn't have clashed. Flaw or no? And you think Jcrew has good prices? How so? Didn't you just say they make cheap clothing? I have bought chinos and jeans with better fits than Jcrew for better prices. I think you are a little to secluded up there in them Canadian Mountains.
By the way, if you want everything EG makes, then don't even bother designing in the future because they are doing it for you. There isn't a single company out there in which I want every piece they make. The fact that you want every piece created by EG is a true testament to your lack of originality. You buy the label clearly and it skews your taste.
PS If you like everything in your catalogue hyr, then you are essentially saying that you like the "don't wear list." Nice dude, keep up the poor spelling, logic, and grammar. Next time you start a mag, get an education first.
"All the best and keep doing what you’re doing."
I will, thanks for the support.
"I just finished putting together outfits with one of the nominees of GQ’s American Designer of the Year (I won’t say who). I think we are both going to have to agree that what you have here is boring, with slight undertones of immaturity."
i'm sure that nominee was so glad to have such an intelligent and humble person assisting them.
i think we're all going to have to agree that what we have here is jealousy, with heavy overtones of insecurity.
i agree nathan, but i must say what a wanky comment that was
infact all of it, arrogant twat
robbo- what's wrong with getting free gear?
What a pointless rant!
If you find "the poor spelling, logic and grammar" so offensive and the posts "boring, with slight undertones of immaturity" why visit the site?
Opinions are healthy but let's make them constructive. I'm sure all of us could find sites we don't like and then post 'clever' comments but what would be the point? In fact, who has the time or the inclination?
Well handled Ryan.
Keep it up, Ryan. That guy is a pud.
wow, someone needs to take their pills
why such anger?
props for not sinking to his/her level Ryan
steven free gear is great..
only if it's worth having
Love & Hate...

It's just clothes guys. Lighten up.
No anger just logic. By not sinking to my level, he simply didn't back up any of the statements he made. I used no profanity, with the exception of ass, but not in reference to him. No jealousy either, nor insecurity. What's to be jealous of? Ryan is not creating these clothes. If I was arrogant, I would say who the designer was and what my own name is. Didn't do that either. By taking on this website and allowing free blogging, Ryan has to be aware that these statements will occur. In that aspect, I greatly respect Ryan for putting himself and his tastes out there. My statements may sound brash, but they are not personal attacks. I like the hyr site and the only thing I was attacking was Ryan's creativity in regards to the outfit he put together. I applaud the work he puts in but when he wants to step his game up to the next level, he will take into consideration what I have said. Aside from that, thank you Ryan for your consistent research and good luck in the future.
PS whether or not Ryan agrees with what I said, it will be in his mind in the future whether he wants it to or not
This is a great concept and I love what you guys are doing - love to see this kind of synergy between two great sites.
On another note, I hope the cranky poster finds something else to do and somewhere else to go - he clearly doesn't fit into the positive vibe of what you're doing.
Vogel is such a hypocrite
"Even your butt buddies at Shipley and Halmos would most likely agree"
That doesn't sound like respect to me. Your comments are beyond "brash"
what a hater, go style your "friend"
Cheers for the hard work ry, some people just have to hate.
Ryan, your the man
that dude's a fag
I suppose the clashing red colors is a favorite of yours? - come on i think you can do better than that!
