Neighborhood Spotlight: Meat & Bread

Meat & Bread is one of the best places to eat lunch in Gastown. There have been a number of new places opening up in the last couple years, but not many of really hit the mark. A simple menu, classic staples, enough variety and overall great quality has me going back time and time again. The bread, meat, atmosphere and value is all quite good, and even if you don't eat meat, they offer a great grilled cheese and nice salads and soups as well. On top of the food and service, the lunch spot has outfitted the shop beautifully and the branding done by Glasfurd & Walker is really well done.

Engineered Garments Duffle Backpack

Words

Engineered Garments aren't necessarily known for their bags, but for years they have put out some great canvas carriers of different forms. This spring, the duffle backpack turned out pretty nice, especially in this military olive green. The bag is simple, but easy to throw around, pack up and carry wherever you need to. It's also now on sale at the Brooklyn retailer.

Words

One of the things many new designers often over look are the simple things. Our Legacy however have put a certain amount of work into their really nice basics. Not even just their denim or chinos, but simply a good fitting, nice feeling pocket t-shirt and crewneck sweat. Available each season, for pretty fair prices, Our Legacy provides great basics for any man's closet.

Last weekend I had a chance to check out The Cheaper Show in Vancouver. The show celebrated its 10th anniversary with an impressive showing, list of local and international artists and a special book to commemorate the event. Some of the show's highlights were work from some of our friends at Inventory as well. Jennilee Marigomen, Chris Taylor and Brendan Meadows all showed their beautiful photography, and Hemlock sponsored the show by printing the Cheaper Book, which I am looking forward to getting my hands on soon.

Sassafras Feel Sun S/S Shirt

Words

Sassafras have summerified one of this classic overshirts. By making the Feel Sun shirt into a short sleeve, but still keeping the weight heavy, it creates a nice shirt, that can be worn a lot in the summer, but still feels tough enough for the fall, perhaps with a thermal or Henley underneath.

Leica Portraits

Words

Leica is a great brand, making a great product. They continue to produce top of the line cameras that just about everyone I know, wishes they could afford, myself included. Anyways, they have been doing a series of short films featuring talented snappers entitled Leica Portraits. Short, sweet and insightful, the videos are worth a viewing, and will probably leave you wanting a Leica even a little bit more.
