Michael Heizer – Altars

Info

Gagosian Gallery
555 West 24th Street
New York, NY 10011
May 9 – July 2, 2015

Words

The legendary and incomparable sculptor Michael Heizer has recently opened his first exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in NYC. The show, running until the beginning of July, features a series of rarely or never-before-seen early paintings, new monumental steel sculptures, and negative wall sculptures that make use of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Heizer is perhaps most famous for creating works of tremendous size that displace tons of earth and have redefined sculpture due to their mass and the process involved in their construction. This approach has been his hallmark since the late '60s and is present in such famous works as Double Negative and Levitated Mass. While these works are site specific, this exhibition is especially notable since it brings his art, normally residing outside of gallery walls, indoors.

East London's Goodhood steadily offers some of the world’s best brands under one roof. On top of that, the shop also has a great in-house line called Goods by Goodhood, which was introduced towards the end of 2013. Products offered as part of the collection include T-shirts, homewares, pins and stickers, often defined by their clever, humorous or inspirational text treatments.

Babylon LA Palm Tree Cap

Words

Although I never really got into the 'wearing your dad's old caps with thousand dollar sneakers' look, certain headwear in that category definitely captures my attention. The style and graphic help to position this piece somewhere between what an East London MC and a noisy hardware nerd would wear, which is a pretty impressive balance to strike.

Nick Klein – Failed Devotee

01

Images

01. Available on 12-inch vinyl.
02. Limited release.

Words

Nick Klein is a large figure in the Brooklyn noise community, but his new record on the Unknown Precept label should finally start to earn him serious recognition the world over. While Nick's music is certainly noisy, it still packs more than enough rhythmic wallop to get your head banging. This sets it apart from the vast majority of noise records, as this 12-inch absolutely devastates in clubs, something I can personally attest to. The sonics are brutal but often possess an almost triumphant synth section that sounds like it was recorded live in a church, as opposed to being the result of turning nobs in his studio.
