The Real McCoy's 12oz Grey Sweatshirt

01

Image

—01. The best sweatshirt in the world?

Words

You'll have a tough time finding a better plain grey sweatshirt than this one. Yes, it's more expensive than mass produced options; yes, there's other brands that make premium sweatshirts with similarly desirable details, but in my opinion, this one by The Real McCoy's is everything you need, or could ever want. In light of that, and with fall upon us - the perfect time for a garment like this - we've produced a limited run of these sweats with Superdenim. We have 40 each and they're available online and in-store now.

Words

Last summer when we ran into the guys from The Bureau they mentioned they were going to be releasing some products under their own brand. It only takes a quick look through their shop to realize it probably wasn't going to be bad. The initial release includes a variety of shirting in classic tones and fabrics, along with some simple knitwear. The house brand looks like its off to a nice start, and we're looking forward to what else might come.

Surplus

01

Info

—01. Paisley print.

Words

I'll be honest: I know nothing about the Hundred Things for sale on the Surplus website. I just discovered them, and as always I'm more than a little late to the party. From what I can gather though it appears to be a collection of one person's surplus belongings, which doesn't sound like all that much, but the selection, simple layout, and well considered photography make for quite a captivating catalog. There really is something for everyone here: from stationary enthusiasts to farmers in the making; although sadly almost all of the items have long since sold out. There are a few of the original 100 items still available, and if you scout around the rest of the site you'll also discover a selection of well designed printed materials that are in stock, and available for sale, should any take your fancy.

Engineered Garments Hooded Down Vest

01

Images

—01. Large drawstring hood.
—02. 90% Goose Down interior.

Words

Almost every season there's something I see early on, most likely in lookbooks or online, that I pass over on initial examination; only to reassess my opinion when I rediscover the piece in the flesh. The first time I saw this particular vest I wasn't too taken with the hood detail, and so, not being much of a vest wearer in the first place, didn't spend too much time analyzing its appeal. I have, however, spent a moment or two reexamining it recently; and my initial stance is slowly beginning to waver. Although I keep visualizing both outfits and opportunities I might have for the vest itself, I probably won't ever make up my mind which colour I prefer; which luckily for me also means I won't ever have to take back all those misguided things I might have once said.

Needles Gradation Knit Socks

Words

Part of a small set of Needles items that includes a short scarf and some fingerless gloves all knitted in the same graduated style, these socks offer an interesting alternative to the various patterned and melange options available this season.

Everyday Life Books

01

Info

—01. China Granite Project II, by Max Lamb.

Words

Apartamento recently expanded their printed matter offering to include the first in a planned series of book releases: China Granite Project II, by the British designer Max Lamb. The book documents a collection of furniture produced by Lamb in 2010 using an igneous granite known as Sesame Black, which is native to the Fujian Province in China. The book itself is both beautifully fabricated and interestingly designed, and I'm sure will be as eagerly anticipated as each new issue of Apartamento.

MHL Kagool Parka

01

Images

—01. Classic cut and considered details.
—02. Moss coloured, 100% cotton.

Words

The longer fitting parka is something I've always found difficult to wear. I own a couple of examples, most notably a classic A.P.C. model and last season's Storm Parka from Engineered Garments, but traditionally I'm much more comfortable with outerwear that stops around the waist. Having said that, I've always admired the classic lines a longer fitting trench or parka can give an outfit, especially when it comes to layers. The balance between various lengths, when done correctly, can give an outfit a nice sense of depth. The Kagool Parka from Margaret Howell's MHL line looks to me like a sensible wardrobe addition for anyone seeking something longer for the fall. All the details are in the right place, and nothing is fussy or over-designed. As is the case with a lot of MHL pieces, the jacket looks to fit a little on the looser, boxier side; which I happen to think actually works well on this type of garment.

Words

There aren't a ton of shops I get excited to stumble across, online or in person. It's difficult to offer something fresh with an ideal atmosphere and unique product range. While Mr. Kitly doesn't exactly break down barriers set by modern retail, it's homey feel, lovely curation of print, homewares and accessories and general 'vibe', all look great. The small upstairs shop resides in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, and also has a neat online shop.
