Comme des Garçons SHIRT Poplin Zip Shirt Jacket

01

Image

01. Made in France.

Words

While Comme des Garçons is often associated with idiosyncrasy, rule-breaking and the avant-garde, the brand is also extremely good when it comes to simplicity. This piece from their SHIRT line is a prime example, striking a perfect balance between basic wearability and modernity. The classic one-pocket styling juxtaposed with a YKK-zipped front suggests forward-thinking design through a straightforward utilization of materials.

Weekend Viewing: El Capitan

01

Video

01. Directed by Fred Padula, 1978.

Words

I recently stumbled upon this film and was so intrigued I had to find out more. In turn, I came across an in-depth feature on the Alpinist magazine website and promptly ordered the DVD. Originally filmed in 1968, it languished in post production hangups for a decade before being edited into El Capitan by Fred Padula. Despite winning the Grand Prize at the 1979 Banff Film Festival, it virtually disappeared until 2012 when Padula initiated a Kickstarter campaign to fund its restoration. Shot by the renowned climber and photographer Glen Denny, it is not your average high-octane paean to the now popular adventure sport, but more a documentary clothed in the guise of a languidly moving and visually arresting art film. It is absolutely remarkable to see guys tying ropes around their waists in preparation to ascend the Nose route on El Cap, and hopping into sleeping bags on minuscule ledges – sometimes even forgetting to clip in. Ultimately, the film seems to distill exactly what an outsider activity it was to participate in the nascent years of big wall climbing at its Mecca: Yosemite Valley.

Wolfgang Tillmans – The Cars

Info

Softcover, 128 pages
6.5 x 9.5 inches
First edition
Published by Walther König, 2015

Words

"I wanted to show how cars appear in typical street view, which is rarely the subject of photographs. Cars are usually avoided in photography - one waits until a car has exited a view. The ordinary presence of cars is rarely worthy of representation. It's always the special car, or the extreme traffic jam or, of course, the exciting crash that is being pictured. The Cars pays tribute to the shapes and forms we look at every day. How much time we spend with them, sitting inside them, the endless hours we stare at a dashboard. Even if we don't own a car ourselves, their presence is unavoidable. Cars are everywhere. Their sheer number is the most crazy thing about them. They appear in our lives with excessive omnipresence. In their volume cars intrude upon public space, and the way they occupy streets and open areas is rarely challenged. Virtually wherever there are people, there are cars and they are visually intermingling in whatever we see. We are looking at the world from a car and cars are in the foreground, the background or in between of what is in our view. Where they are, they add a tone, a note, a presence, a noise to the setting they're in." – Wolfgang Tillmans

Dime Vans Slip-On Pro

01

Image

01. Banana stompers.

Words

Tomorrow in Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood Dime will open a pop-up shop in collaboration with Vans to celebrate the release of their Slip-On Pro model. It's the first time the two brands have worked together, and Dime's first foray into footwear. Featuring UltraCush HD Cushioning, Pro Vulc Lite construction and DURACAP reinforcements, the shoe itself is made for performance, but its pared-back aesthetic is sure to be a success on and off the grip tape.

Sacai Drawcord Flannel Shirt

01

Image

01. Snap buttons throughout.

Words

The idiosyncratic Japanese label, Sacai, seems to be popping up at a lot more stockists this season, and that’s particularly exciting because the Fall-Winter ’15 collection looks really strong. Haven has received a range of shirts, pants and outerwear, many of which feature the brand’s now signature drawcord waistband. Their inventive take on a common sportswear feature transforms this fairly regular cotton flannel shirt into a unique modern classic – with equally high-level design detailing apparent across the offering.

Larry Bell 2D-3D: Glass & Vapor

Info

White Cube Mason's Yard
25-26 Mason's Yard
London SW1Y 6BU
July 17 – September 26, 2015

Words

White Cube gallery in London has recently opened its fourth solo show centred around Larry Bell, an artist widely associated with the California ‘Light and Space’ movement. A selection of the process-based works that have come to define Bell's stylistic signature are on display, ranging from three early coated glass installations to more recent ‘Vapor Drawings’ on paper. The newest pieces, produced in 2014, come in the form of his ‘Light Knot’ sculptures that are made from “pliable, vacuum coated, curvaceously-shaped sheets of polyester film” and suspended in transparent cases. This exhibition begs to be seen in person, addressing the apparent concerns with light’s relation to an intensely treated surface and what phenomena that process conjures.

Spalwart Special Mid

01

Image

01. Cotton canvas and rubber.

Words

There is such an abundance of white canvas sneakers available that unless you’re absolutely committed to wearing one style, choosing between them is very difficult. I've seen an array of Spalwart footwear as the brand's profile has risen over the last few seasons, but I don’t often come across this straightforward monochromatic mid model. Now that they’re firmly in my mind, it would be hard for me to consider other options as this pair offers everything one might want, right down to being produced with the original 1950s moulds and machinery.
