Brion Gysin: Unseen Collaborator

Info

October Gallery
24 Gloucester Street
Bloomsbury
London WC1N 3AL
July 2 – October 3, 2015

Words

I was aware of the role Brion Gysin played in creating the incredible Dreamachine light sculpture, but until reading William Burroughs’ latest biography, Call Me Burroughs, I didn't know how innovative an artist and thinker he really was. Having introduced Burroughs to the cut-up technique, it’s hard to say where one of the most famous beat writer’s careers may have gone without him. "Neo-calligrapher, master of line, multimedia revolutionary and cultural historian, Gysin’s experiences in New York, Tangier, Paris and London influenced his seminal artistic productions." Judging by the imagery online, this seems like an outstanding exhibition, and a welcome return for an artist who had his first solo show in the UK at the very same gallery.

Words

Many people associate technical fabrics with specific forms of exercise or poor weather conditions, but functional clothing is equally relevant to the requirements of daily life as temperatures rise, particularly in a city environment. When it comes to the latter and the countless considerations involved, few brands succeed in the way that Arc'teryx Veilance does. This season's collection, captured on the streets of New York for our latest online feature, combines innovation and wearability with a well-balanced colour palette.

Star of Hollywood "Unholy Boomerang" Shirt

01

Image

01. Urea buttons.

Words

Every summer I find myself lusting after one of Star of Hollywood's incredible short-sleeved shirts. An eBay search turns up next nothing vintage-wise, so the licensed reproductions by Toyo Enterprises offer an appealing alternative. Click on the brand's name in the tag section below to see the mind-blowing version from last year that I still regret not getting. Fortunately, this one is equally outstanding. Made in Japan from a slubby cotton fabric, it features a perfectly boxy 1950s cut alongside a tasteful graphic treatment referred to as "Unholy Boomerang," which wasn't originally available with a black background.

Close-Up on John Cassavetes

Info

Close-Up Film Centre
97 Sclater Street
London E1 6HR

Words

At the beginning of the month, Close-Up, the London-based film archive and library, opened a cinema complete with a pair of newly restored 35mm projectors which will host a regular schedule of programming. To celebrate this exciting addition to the capital's cinematic landscape a series of John Cassavetes films are being screened, including A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Opening Night. If possible, it would be well worth seeing them all, and experiencing each one on film, the way the director originally intended.
