Adidas Originals Suisse

01

Images

01. Suede and mesh upper.
02. Collegiate green.

Words

The Suisse is not a style I was ever aware of, but next to a lot of Adidas Originals reissues it stands out as an interesting choice. Pairing more modern elements with a somewhat retro shape, the late '80s style bridges the gap between the well-known classics Adidas offers and some of their contemporary designs.

Walter De Maria at Gagosian Gallery

Info

Gagosian Gallery
980 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10075
November 8 – December 20, 2014

Words

Opening at the Gagosian's Madison Avenue gallery in New York on November 8th, this exhibition featuring sculptures and works on paper by the late artist, Walter De Maria, marks the first showing of these pieces from his estate. Utilizing mathematical and geometric conceits as well as large scale and spatial relations, De Maria’s installations, though cold to some in their meticulous concepts and arrangements, need to be seen to be experienced and I can’t help but feel envious of those that will get the opportunity.

Pud II by Jason Nocito

01

Image

—01. Edition of 750.

Words

Jason Nocito’s personal work is some of the photography I relate to the most, initially being exposed to him through his connection as a former Vancouver resident. Pud II, designed by Ari Marcopoulos and Camilla Venturini of Ordinary Books, is a companion to Nocito's first release in this series, which will eventually form a trilogy. Built around the same large format photos of multicoloured NYC puddles in all their trash-filled glory, the second volume is also interspersed with supporting imagery that often comes off stoned, sometimes voyeuristic, and completely idiosyncratic.

Champion x Freak's Store Coaches Jacket

01

Images

01. Quilted lining.
02. 100% polyester.

Words

Champion's Japanese line teamed up with Freak's Store to make this beautifully classic-looking coaches jacket. Available in two colours, the tonal patch and snaps, along with the shine of the polyester itself, make this jacket look like something all the extras would have worn while filming The French Connection. Which is a good thing in my opinion.

Words

Superga's classic 2750 sneaker takes on a grey look this season. With a tonal suede upper and rubber midsole, the gum bottom is a nice compliment and subtle hit of contrast on the 'colourless' fall edition.

Weekend Listening: Coil - Gold is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders)

01

Video

01. Directed by Peter Christopherson.

Words

I was looking through the most expensive records bought on Discogs this month, and right there at the top, was a limited edition of Coil's 1987 masterpiece Gold is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders). While I recently found that this is actually an album of outtakes from their first two records, you certainly wouldn't know it listening to the LP as a whole. Coil as a group are widely known as 'experimental noise' artists, which, to an outsider, can sound like the most daunting description of music imaginable. I think if you give this record a chance though, you will find more often than not this 'noise' resembles pretty beautiful music. The cuts range wildly in variety, you will hear everything from classical compositions, to screeching madness, to the more rhythmic numbers that ended up being the catalyst for the creation of industrial techno. The song I feature here falls into the more classical category, accompanied by the original video directed by Coil co-founder Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson, of Psychic TV fame. Please keep any jokes about its vague similarity to the Game of Thrones theme music to yourself, thanks.
