Mt Rainier Design

Mt Rainier Design ss10 -1

Mt Rainier Design continues to be one of the mystery brands that are made in the USA under a heritage name, yet the original company seems to have disappeared decades ago. While Crescent Down Works have been receiving a lot of the local press lately, I would have to admit that whoever is behind the outdoor collection at Mr Rainier is doing an even better job. The range isn't big, but it feels complete and has enough different items and accessories to keep it interesting. I love the colours used on some of the parkas, while the unique but classic variety of pockets make me want one of each. The 60/40 fabric seems to be used for most of the collection which is really ideal for spring. It's great that Crescent Down Works has become a bit more available and is being picked up by more shops like Present and J.Crew. There seems to be a growing market for the light weight outerwear which I would hope might lead to somebody tracking down the source of these great items so we might be able to have a little more variety.

Well damn. That's a nice looking collection and I would have to agree, at least in principle, with the preference over CDW. The righthandside jacket in the main picture... holy shit! That thing looks about perfect.

Whoever is designing this stuff knows what's up. I'm not about to advocate it, because I don't agree with all this overseas produced heritage wear, but I must say that this collection, everything from the fanny packs to the vests, is gorgeous. You can find all this stuff in the United States still; you just have to know what you're looking for and search far. REI's collections from the 70s and 80s are where this inspirations is from, even 70s Pacific Iron Works (now Patagonia) or even Chouinard; Gregory perhaps. I mean, I'm not expecting the visitors of this site to know how to delve into past to find this stuff, but this stuff is available, and you don't have to go to Japan to get it. Keep it in U S of A.

ulysses youre posts have become boring, are you on meds, are have you been censored

February 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersid

I have to disagree, I think Ulysses' posts have been better much more interesting lately. I can see your point about overseas produced heritage wear, but if there is the market overseas, then so be it. What bothers me more is the Made in US goods that are only sold overseas. It should at least be sold here!

A gorgeous fanny pack is an oxymoron.

CDG at J. Crew?!

"A gorgeous fanny pack is an oxymoron."

You obviously don't know about the practicality that a fanny pack can provide on a nice hike or bike ride. Practicality when combined with aesthetic "heritage" based design is quite beautiful.

You need to work on getting these for the INVENTORY shop!

I agree with the previous comment, it'd be great if you did some digging and tracked down some
pieces for the stockroom. This stuff is great looking, and the regional connection just adds to the appeal.

This shit is so boring.....

I agree, it would be great to get this stuff for the Stockroom! No doubt about it. We have definitely been doing some digging on a few brands but the process is tough working through Japan. We are definitely trying to put together a couple things for the future that I hope people will be into.

Anachronorm! (please) :D

February 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterzissou

Zissou - Union in LA will be stocking Anachronorm this spring! You'll have to check for it there shortly. Definitely an interesting brand. We don't have a lot of room, so we are being pretty specific about the brands we are bringing in first.

They look interesting to you at the moment becos they have that heritage or americana look that is in? 5 years ago and 5 years later, you will probably find them extremely boring. Welcome to fashion.

*Half this Japanese-US heritage re-issue stuff is made in Korea in any case-seems like CDW just do what they have always done and are not interested in moving a pocket here or there to make it more interesting for bloggers.

I very much agree. I wouldn't wear it out to an opening, but there is something about being out in the woods with simple, well-made functional gear that is quite comforting. A case of fashion being for yourself and not for others to see (although I have definitely been in awe crossing older hikers styled in classic camp gear, or passed by a rider kitted out in a wool jersey on a beautiful handmade bicycle).
