Archy Marshall – A New Place 2 Drown

01

01. Available to buy or stream.

Words

The latest release from Archy Marshall – previously known as King Krule and before that, Zoo Kid – is his most mature. A nicely packaged album, book and short film provide an insightful look into the artist's life and creative process. The music itself is his best work to date; a slight departure from past records, it sees Marshall experimenting more with instrumentals, which demonstrate a notable evolution in his production abilities. Overall there's a less traditional structure, allowing the London-based musician to create an intimate and sometimes darker atmosphere.

Chris Burden – Buddha's Fingers

Info

Gagosian Gallery
980 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10075
January 19 – February 20, 2016

Words

"Buddha's Fingers (2014–15) is a dense cluster of 32 antique cast-iron vernacular street lamps, electrified with cool, bright LED bulbs and standing almost 12 feet tall. The work is related to Urban Light (2008), Burden's celebrated permanent installation of 202 lamp posts, which stands at the entrance to LACMA in Los Angeles. In 2000, Burden began collecting the street lamps that used to line residential streets in Los Angeles during the 1920s and 1930s, and repurposed them as sculptural installations. In Buddha’s Fingers, the hexagonal lamp bases are set in a tight honeycomb formation. The whimsical title refers to the fingered citrus fruit 'buddha's hand,' a recurrent still-life motif and subject in classical Asian art, and a religious symbol of happiness, longevity, and good fortune."

Final Week – Tintin: Hergé's Masterpiece

Info

Somerset House
Terrace Rooms, South Wing
London WC2R 1LA
November 12, 2015 – January 31, 2016

Words

"Stepping inside the wonderfully eccentric world of artist-author Hergé and Tintin, his intrepid young reporter, the exhibition explores the evolution of the artwork of Hergé, from the simplicity of early newspaper strips to the genre-defining graphic work of the later books. Drawing on the archives of the Hergé Museum in Belgium, Tintin: Hergé's Masterpiece features pencil sketches, character drawings, and watercolours alongside original artwork from the finished stories.

The exhibition also reveals more about the man behind the masterpiece. Hergé had an enduring fascination with architecture and design. With his skill as an illustrator and a draughtsman's eye for design, the settings in which the stories were played out were always rendered in meticulous detail."

Boncoura Off-White Denim

01

Images

01. Straight leg.
02. Made in Japan.

Words

Controversial as it might be in some quarters, I'm quite partial to an off-white jean, especially a pair with a seemingly perfect fit like this option from the Japanese brand Boncoura. They’re not overly slim, offering a vintage-inspired straight cut in an appealing buttermilk shade of selvedge denim.
