Fennica has become well-known as a great source for traditional Japanese pottery. This spring they are hosting a small exhibition which features a variety of ceramics made in Mashiko, an area noted for its handmade pottery.

Nice to see Mashiko mentioned, I was there in January to have a quick look at wares. The area attracts a lot of younger ceramic artists who don't wish to cater to the Kasama style of pots. A short hope across the mountains from Ibaraki to Tochigi and you'll arrive at a small cafe cum craft shop called Starnet ( http://www.kagure.jp/eng/ ) which offers small curated range of local makers.

More & more ex Tokyo-ites trying to rediscover their heritage.

Well, let's hope they like what they discover. There are a couple of bad apples in Japan's history that might shock them.
