Band of Outsiders latest collection features much of what we've become used to, a classic mix of causal shirting and light weight jackets mixed with suiting and accessories. The Polaroid aesthetic has always appealed to me, especially for a spring campaign. Instead of the usual silver screen talent, Band has opted for painter Ed Ruscha to model their current collection.

Although there is a crazy mix of SS12 previews, along with FW11 posts of items arriving and coming soon - these images by Piotr are worth a look regardless of the season. He was invited backstage to document the day of that Band of Outsiders showcased their SS12 collection in Florence. The shots turned out nicely and although its only a glimpse into the clothing and design, it gives the collection and brand a nice feel and texture that the runway photos might not.

Band of Outsiders' Fall goods have started arriving in shops and as to be expected, the shirting looks good. The backbone of the brand has always been their simple, well fitting shirts in nice colours, interesting patterns and top quality materials. South Willard in LA has just received some of these shirts and there are a handful of perfectly faded stripes and muted colours that may well be meant for the Fall but feel just right for right now.

Band of Outsiders Spring Collection

I'm well aware that probably everyone browsing the internet has probably seen the latest look book by Band of Outsiders, but I'm not going to let that stop me from posting it again. While I know what to expect every season from Mr. Sternberg, I can't help but be impressed time and time again at how he pieces the collection together, shoots with the lovely aesthetic of Polaroid and seems to be having fun while doing it. While the prices are always high and the garments sit on the best shelves around the world, the brand continues to not take itself too seriously, it at least make it feel that way. I haven't seen a particular piece that I must have, but the way the brand is presented makes it very appealing and the spring look collection photos again are one of the strongest of the season. —

Weekend Wear: Rugby Shirts

Rugby shirts are worn around the world by supporters and players, both on the pitch and in the streets — however they are not usually worn or done very well. While Canterbury of New Zealand has done a fair job and transitioning into casual wear, Canada's own Barbarian Rugby Wear continue to make what they make best, and nothing else. We've noted a couple Japanese retailers bringing in products you might not regularly see in the standard catalogues and that would make great casual over shirts in the fall-winter. Simple stripes, nice colours and a well made 12oz cotton does well to stand up to the cold, wind and water. Other designers have made rugby wears within their collections but it doesn't often come together very well, or feels a little fake. While Mr. Sternberg isn't likely to be round in a scrum on weekends, Band of Outsiders has done a nice version this fall.

Band of Outsiders Striped Oxford

One of my favourite oxford shirts this season actually hasn't come from Gitman Vintage, surprisingly. Band of Outsider's new body combined with the subtle stripes on this oxford shirt have it on top of my list this fall. The soft blue combined with a gentle yellow somehow has blended beautifully. The two colours I might not naturally pair, especially in the fall, work well here and layered under any sport coat or sweater. While I'm still warming to the darts on the back, I like the shape of this shirt and it feels great on. If I buy one Band of Outsiders shirt this season, it will be this one. – Available at Opening Ceremony

Band of Outsiders BD Flannel

Band of Outsiders have quietly added a slightly different cut to the collection this fall. Some of the oxford BD and flannel shirts have a slightly elongated size tag which signifies the body shape. They actually tried this a few seasons ago and it didn't quite work out, however this fall's new body shape is a winner for me. Finally a few of the shirts fit my frame a little better. Even though I wear a large as apposed to my regular medium, the slim shirting is long enough on the sides while still coming with the right size neck and wide enough shoulders. Of the patterns in this shape, the red plaid flannel is one of my favorites. It's about as classic a fall shirt as you can get and done as well as you could hope for.
