The BOY subsection of Comme des Garçons SHIRT offers a slightly more youthful product. For Fall-Winter '15 the collection has grown to incorporate a small selection of outerwear, including this nylon coach jacket with snap closures, a synthetic fleece lining and printed branding on the back.

Q&A with Fumito Ganryu

01

Image

01. A child of Comme.

Words

While Ganryu was launched in 2007, we've only begun to see its presence in Western markets over the past few seasons. Following Junya Watanabe's trail, both as a pattern maker and then with his own collection under the Comme des Garçons umbrella, Fumito Ganryu has created something unique within the realm that the overarching brand occupies. His line offers a fresh approach to wearable items, with a goal of creating "free and forward-looking" pieces. Oki-ni spoke to him about his inspiration and the AW15 collection.

Comme des Garçons SHIRT / Supreme Autumn Winter 2015

01

Images

01. Long Sleeve T-Shirt.
02. Work Jacket & Trousers.

Words

Supreme and Comme des Garçons SHIRT have just announced their latest collaborative collection together. The small selection of pieces comprises five items of clothing, set to be released on September 24th, and a pair of 6-inch Timberland boots which will follow in December. Underpinned by a London-set lookbook, the offering has a strong British feel, juxtaposing traditional tartans with clean graphics on classic styles.

Last week Comme des Garçons opened their first Pocket shop in the US, located on 10th Avenue in New York, just off the High Line. The Japanese brand has been rolling out these small shops since 2007, offering a mix of wallets, perfume and items from the Play line in a more intimate neighbourhood retail environment.

Comme des Garçons Homme Plus Wide Collar Cotton Shirt

01

Images

01. Made in Japan.
02. Collar detail.

Words

While I might admittedly prefer collars more prevalent in the 1940s and 1970s, you can't ignore the '80s forever. This shirt from Comme des Garçons Homme Plus looks like it was ripped straight out of the 1989 film Slaves of New York, with its classic silhouette and larger than life flourishes. It also doesn't hurt that the price seems to be from a bygone era as well.

Ganryu Nylon Bomber

01. Polyester padding.

Words

This season is the first time that the Ganryu line from Comme des Garçons has been made available via Dover Street Market's E-Shop. The collection always features an interesting mix of fabrics and textures, while achieving a nice balance between challenging silhouettes and easy to wear pieces. This nylon bomber falls into the latter category, making it one of my top choices from the brand's latest offering.

Comme des Garçons SHIRT Poplin Zip Shirt Jacket

01

Image

01. Made in France.

Words

While Comme des Garçons is often associated with idiosyncrasy, rule-breaking and the avant-garde, the brand is also extremely good when it comes to simplicity. This piece from their SHIRT line is a prime example, striking a perfect balance between basic wearability and modernity. The classic one-pocket styling juxtaposed with a YKK-zipped front suggests forward-thinking design through a straightforward utilization of materials.

Comme des Garçons Homme Plus Spring-Summer '16

01

Image

01. SS16 presentation.

Words

Of the three collections presented in Paris last week by Comme des Garçons, Homme Plus was a definite standout. From the intimate setting within an old, derelict apartment to the wonderful music, interesting pace, and subtle interaction of the models, it evoked a certain intrigue, drawing you into the clothing further. With a theme of "broken tailoring," Rei Kawakubo aimed to break down classic shapes and functionality, and through superior finishing and subtle detail, was able to create something that felt quite fresh.
