Remembering the Streetwise Photographer

01

Image

Words

Of all the documentaries that have attempted to capture the often grisly details of life on the street, the most successful is perhaps the 1984 film Streetwise. Directed by Martin Bell and photographed by Mary Ellen Mark, it follows a small group of teenage runaways through their daily lives in the gutters of Seattle. When I first saw it, the effects were hard to shake, intensified by the fact that my mom grew up on the same streets not long before they started making the film. The feeling of shattered innocence looms over every shot, captured beautifully by Mark. I was very sad to hear that she had passed away last week, but you can learn more about her life and process in this fascinating interview recently published by Dazed.

Beirut-born photographer Toufic Beyhum has been visiting the Brixton Masjid for the past year to capture the footwear worn by young Muslims for Friday prayers. The subsequent images have a beautifully contemporary feel, bringing a familiar sight for many Londoners to much a wider audience.

Dazed is focusing in on everything grime at the moment, coinciding with Ewen Spencer's documentary Open Mic, which premiered on the UK's Channel 4 in the early hours of this morning. Included in the series of features, they've assembled firsthand recollections and a gallery of archived images highlighting what grime fans, and artists such as JME, D Double E, Wiley, Kano and Dizzee Rascal wore from the early 2000s onwards.

Shot at two of New York's legendary basketball courts – Rucker Park in Harlem and Bronx-based Hoops in the Sun – The Season by photographer Yusuke Miyagawa captures street ball in a new light. Tired of the standard imagery usually seen, he got up close to the action, running alongside the players at times, in order to put a fresh perspective on a classic action sport.

Behind the Scenes: Gosha Rubchinskiy Spring-Summer '15

Gosha Rubchinskiy showed in Paris for the first time this season, and it was his most well-rounded offering to date. The youthful collection included the graphic sweats the brand has become known for, but it also bridged the gap with a variety leather and fur outerwear pieces, beautiful knits, and a healthy dose of colourful cut and sew. It's one of the few younger brands that I've been excited about of late, and these behind the scenes photos give a different perspective to the show imagery on Style.com.
