I stumbled across these beautiful pieces of, both, glassware and naval history recently. Produced by Corning during WWII for the US Navy, this handleless mug was used as a hand warmer by sailors on watch duty. There are many fine examples turning up, at any given time, on eBay.

Some people around here are pretty good at the ol' eBay game. I'm not one of them. I'll watch, maybe bid, then forget or fall asleep; usually missing out on the best thing ever by ten cents. At least I have all the photos I've saved in the process, clogging up my hard drive, to help make up for all the near misses, and what-if's. The folder containing the brand, fabric and washing tags is a personal favourite. It's like collecting internet stamps.
