Albers & the Bauhaus

Stephen Friedman Gallery
11 Old Burlington Street
London W1S 3AQ
February 10 – March 12, 2016

While the core of this exhibition revolves around the output of Josef Albers in the 1920s and '30s, it also includes the work of Marcel Breuer, Otto Lindig and Marianne Brandt, as a means of creating a more complete sense of the Bauhaus and its ideals. The resulting collection of drawings, paintings, photographs, furniture, ceramics, glassware and other objects is displayed alongside a series of artworks produced by Albers and his wife, Anni, between the 1940s and '70s. With two weeks of its run at the Stephen Friedman Gallery to go, this is an essential show for anyone interested in modernist art and design, as well as the unmistakable influence of the Bauhaus.

Vintage Wassily Lounge Chairs at The Good Mod

01. Made by Knoll.

The Wassily chair is one of the most iconic Bauhaus designs, and probably Marcel Breuer's most recognizable piece. This beautiful brown leather pair are available from West Coast retailer The Good Mod, who have a dangerous selection of vintage furniture for sale through their showroom and web store.

Marcel Breuer Laccio Tables by Knoll

—01. Laminate tops.

Usually when I get fixated on a certain piece of furniture, I can't help but hunt for it until it's in my home. The Laccio Tables, designed by Marcel Breuer and produced by Knoll, are one such example. They're not necessarily the type of thing that strikes you on first glance, but their Bauhaus style and minimal aesthetic make them extremely versatile. They tend to blend into their setting, allowing the space and objects around them to be the highlight, as good design often should.

Zeitlos – Berlin

01. Mart Stam Cantilever Chair.
02. Marcel Breuer Typewriter Table.

I’m always looking for both furniture inspiration and a great shop that collects a large selection of fairly specific items. Zeitlos – Berlin is most definitely both of these things but, for me, price and proximity mean that it functions best as the former. If these limitations are less of an issue, it's an amazing treasure trove where you can buy some very rare and appealing design classics from a variety of iconic eras.
