Words

StudioSmall's work with Margaret Howell is some of the design agency's most successful, achieving a consistently beautiful balance between the client's vision and their own principles – irrespective of the medium or brief. Looking at this output overall, it's the printed invitations that often stand out, and a range of them are assembled here. The 36-page commemorative publication explores the evolution of a decade-long relationship grounded in the Gill Sans typeface, alongside a contextualising essay from Eye magazine editor and co-owner John L. Walters.

01-02. Photographs by Yannis Vlamos.

Words

The Margaret Howell Autumn-Winter '16 men's collection was presented at the brand's Wigmore Street store in London today. A mix of mainline and MHL pieces combined to create an effortless balance between the tailored and utilitarian styles that often define each label. Highlights included six-button double breasted jackets, long belted Mackintosh coats, and Dainite-soled Chelsea boots, while two-tone silk scarves and high-waisted cropped trousers formed a consistent thread throughout. Kaikado Tea Caddies

01. Only ten made each day.

Words

Kaikado began producing handmade tea caddies in 1875 using sheets of tin imported from Cornwall in the UK. The company's small Kyoto factory only makes ten each day, with incredible precision and the perfect balance between simple design and personal character. With years of use the airtight containers, available in a variety of sizes and finishes, begin to reveal a deeper appeal as they develop an ever-evolving patina.

Margaret Howell 2016 Calendar: Barbara Hepworth Exhibition Catalogues 1954-1971

Words

Earlier this year Margaret Howell designed a capsule collection to accompany the Barbara Hepworth retrospective at Tate Britain. As part of this process, an array of historical exhibition catalogues were discovered, and it's the covers of these which form the basis of the brand's latest calendar. In Margaret's words,"they are of their time, but still impress as pared down design that conveys the dynamism and power of the work it represents." The calendars are now for sale in-store and online, with profits to be donated to Open-City.

Words

To accompany a new exhibition of over 50 items from the Ken Stradling Collection curated by Margaret Howell, we are pleased to present a conversation between the collector and the designer. Shot on location in Bristol, the short film offers a glimpse into Stradling’s modern design archive, and sees the pair discuss not only the origins, but also the depth and breadth of his collection.

Made by regular Inventory contributor Rick Pushinsky, alongside Tim Bowditch, it captures the diversity of Stradling’s surroundings and touches upon the work of Marcel Breuer for Bristol furniture manufacturer Crofton Gane. A major component of the exhibition, these pieces will be complimented by a selection of studio pottery, glassware and everyday household objects. The show opens at Margaret Howell’s Wigmore Street store in London on Thursday October 15th, and runs until Saturday November 15th, 2015.

Words

Margaret Howell does an outstanding job of championing the most storied companies from the United Kingdom and these monkey boots, made by Solovair, are a prime example. The British firm, founded 1881, famously handled the production of Dr. Martens for 35 years and still manufactures footwear in Northamptonshire.
