The legendary and incomparable sculptor Michael Heizer has recently opened his first exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in NYC. The show, running until the beginning of July, features a series of rarely or never-before-seen early paintings, new monumental steel sculptures, and negative wall sculptures that make use of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Heizer is perhaps most famous for creating works of tremendous size that displace tons of earth and have redefined sculpture due to their mass and the process involved in their construction. This approach has been his hallmark since the late '60s and is present in such famous works as Double Negative and Levitated Mass. While these works are site specific, this exhibition is especially notable since it brings his art, normally residing outside of gallery walls, indoors.
