With the second installment of the Stussy x Neighborhood Boneyards project around the corner, we take a look at some of the best items in the collection. While some are simple, the two brands have definitely put their mark on them in a subtle and effective way. The Levi's jacket with leather sleeves is an obvious stand out and will probably be a quick piece to go - perhaps our Gastown neighbors will give us a sneak peak.

Neighborhood Thermals

Neighborhood just recently found its way into a Canadian shop for the first time thanks to Haven. Last week they received their first shipment of the Fall/Winter BLACK ICON collection which contains a number of nice pieces. Some deep olive chinos and a down vest caught my eye but the pick of the lot for me is these Healthknit thermal shirts. The classic black crew neck version is just the right amount of plain, but the nice subtlety of the details in the pattern makes it stand out. On the other hand the off-white henley version is a really nice colour with some great looking buttons. Perhaps my favourite bit on both shirts is their awesome tags though.

Neighborhood Mountain Parka

neighborhood-2010-1st-ex-series-10 Neighborhood's first collection of 2010 dubbed "The Magnificent Seven" has recently started hitting stores and it's looking as good as per usual. One piece that hasn't shown up outside of Japan unfortunately though is the Mountain Parka. While not a collaborative piece, you can definitely see the inspiration again from classic american outdoor company Marmot here. While it might seem easy to execute with such a strong reference point there's plenty of examples out there of how it can go awry. Neighborhood add to the jacket some subtle changes like tonal snaps, slit pockets, black cuff straps and then with their typical not so subtle use of patches. The royal blue is a perfect colour for the spring, it's just a shame that costs have likely prohibited retailers outside of Japan from being able to bring in the jacket.

Neighborhood Cords

jeansnbhdwashednarrowcordroyCorduroy pants are high on my radar right now. Unfortunately the pair I recently ordered turned out to be too small so Ive sort of been back on the hunt for a light khaki/tan pair. While browsing Mr. SKs recent stock I noticed some Neighborhood cords that looked great. The roughed up and worn in looking pants are pretty much exactly what I want mine to look like in five or ten years. However, I also wouldnt mind if they arrived brand new because that doesnt look bad either. Neighborhoods fall collection continues to impress and Im seeing more and more items from the Japanese brand that I want.

Neighborhood + Marmot Mountain Parka

neighborhood-marmot-parkaI've recently done posts about similar jackets by Supreme and Margaret Howell - each one influenced by brands that have shaped outdoor clothing culture. Though based around different reference points, both clearly benefited from an understanding of this history. Neighborhood have taken things one step further. Much like their work with Viberg, the decision to collaborate with Marmot reflects a genuine appreciation of tradition. It may seem like an unusual choice but the classic American brand have been crafting quality outdoor products since the early 70s. By drawing directly on this experience, Neighborhood have produced something even more substantial. I'm sure it's a jacket they could have done alone but the outcome is undoubtedly improved by Marmot's involvement. The two brands are very different but each has played to its strengths. Neighborhood's contribution is evident in the overall styling. The patches and pocket placement reference a different era and give the jacket a more traditional feel. Marmot's considerable experience is at the forefront of the production, ensuring an outcome that's much more than a fashion item. It's a union based solely on creating the best possible product. In an age of widespread collaboration, that's rare and something I find really refreshing.

Neighborhood + Viberg Bobcat Boot

nbhd-viberg-bobcat-boot1Hopefully you read Ryan’s report on Viberg in the 24th issue of Monocle. They’re one of the finest and most respected boot companies in the world and have been handcrafting their iconic footwear in Canada since 1931. While not in any way a fashion brand, they’re still happy to work with others on more contemporary products. The Bobcat is great in isolation but in collaboration with Neighborhood, an even more beautiful boot has been created. I always like multi-tone footwear and these are a perfect example of how well it can work. Combining different shades of leather and suede may seem simple enough but as I’ve mentioned before, exercising control in collaboration always produces the best results. Neighborhood’s boot updates a classic but still keeps Viberg’s heritage in mind and when working with anything traditional that’s never a bad thing.
