Red Wing 9096 Caverly Chukka Boot

01

Image

01. Black Esquire leather.

Words

I recently discovered Red Wing’s Caverly Chukka, a style which doesn't seem to be offered by many of the brand's stockists, and was duly impressed. The timeless two-eyelet boot fits my utilitarian requirements for everyday leather footwear, and would work seamlessly with any casual jeans and T-shirt uniform. Made in Minnesota on the Postman last with a Gro-Cord Medallion sole, I can only imagine how incredible they'd look after years of regular wear.

Raoul De Keyser: Drift

Info

24 Grafton Street
London W1S 4EZ
November 26, 2015 – January 23, 2016

Words

The late Raoul De Keyser's first exhibition at the David Zwirner gallery in London is nearing the end of its two-month run, but there’s still time to see the show before it finishes next week. Drift features 22 paintings known as The Last Wall, completed shortly before the artist’s death in 2012, which are being shown together for the first time. It also includes works from the 1990s and 2000s, that similarly display De Keyser’s sparse and intriguing painterly expressions.

Our Legacy SS16 'Syndrome' Collection

Info

Photography: Erik Wåhlström
Art Direction: Andreas Doré

Words

The latest collection from Our Legacy, entitled 'Syndrome,' plays off a series of different ideas: the fleeting attraction to a piece of clothing found while traveling; the contrast between casualwear and uniform, and how they intersect; and the mix of extreme utilitarian detailing on light 'soft' styles that bear a borderline feminine aesthetic. The accompanying lookbook, shot by Erik Wåhlström and art directed by Andreas Doré, is one of the best from the Swedish brand, using a combination of colour and black and white imagery to illustrate these themes beautifully.

Pye Corner Audio – Prowler

Info

MTH008
Second pressing
Edition of 500

Words

"Building on the eldritch electronica of Martin Jenkins' four-volume Black Mill Tapes, comes Prowler: a seven-track collection of kosmische synthscapes that will appeal to fans of Broadcast and the Warp label. Cinematic in conception and approach, the LP wordlessly reveals a small-hours narrative of tension and fear, via creeping keys, fragmentary melodies and water-torture percussion."

Margaret Howell Autumn-Winter '16

01

Images

01-02. Photographs by Yannis Vlamos.

Words

The Margaret Howell Autumn-Winter '16 men's collection was presented at the brand's Wigmore Street store in London today. A mix of mainline and MHL pieces combined to create an effortless balance between the tailored and utilitarian styles that often define each label. Highlights included six-button double breasted jackets, long belted Mackintosh coats, and Dainite-soled Chelsea boots, while two-tone silk scarves and high-waisted cropped trousers formed a consistent thread throughout. Wacko Maria Drunkard's Dream Shirt

01

Images

01. 100% cotton.
02. Chain stitch embroidery.

Words

A mechanic’s work shirt just this shade of green, often to be found in vintage stores, is something I’ve always kept an eye out for. This one, offered by Wacko Maria, raises the level a little bit with a mix of bold chain stitching and subtle stamped branding. The back is especially good, presenting the Japanese brand’s continual music references in a beautiful bowling-cum-filling station script. It's a great piece, even if you don’t like green as much as I do and want to play it safe with the black or navy version.

Richard Tuttle and Agnes Martin: Religion of Love

Info

Hardback
36 pages, 9.5 x 8 inches
1 colour, 14 B&W illustrations
Published by Walther König, 2016

Words

"Because Religion of Love (written in 1990s) is so late in coming out, we hope it worth the wait. As representative of one of the most important artist’s late thinking; on the one hand, it reconfirms her most classical thought (Beauty is the mystery of life), and, on the other, adds new thought with an urgency only found in a mature artist of her age and persuasion. One of the most rigorous of sensibilities, we do not know what she meant by uncharacteristically asking another artist, Richard Tuttle, to illustrate her text, for she, unlike he, had a clear understanding of the meaning of illustration. Knowing that, he took it up as much to fathom a friend’s genius after their passing, as well as the chance to say goodbye, life did not include, yet made available in publication. Hopefully, the reader can enjoy these various levels of interaction as art." Richard Tuttle, London, September 2014.
