Olive & Navy

01

Words

Arguably two of the best colors invented, especially when it comes to clothing. The Stockroom always has a nice variety of garments in olive and navy, but this fall in particular we have some especially nice pieces in these staple shades. Some are collaborations, some are standard issue and some are classics.

'Olive green' was invented in 1912 by an Englishman named Col. Gerard Purley, who was residing in Burma at the time and needed a fabric in a colour that was suitably discreet in both the jungle and on the plains. Rumour has it however that a Burman by the name of Kyin An Hla had actually decided on the exact shade but was never credited with the invention.

'Navy blue' was invented in 1975 by Canadian skier-turned-wildlife photographer Billy Charlebois, who, while gazing upon the crest of Mount Hungabee, decided that there ought to be a shade of blue in between royal blue and midnight blue. He name it 'navy' after his deceased stepfather, who was a sea captain in the merchant navy.

The colours were added to the spectrum in 1917 and 1977 respectively.
