Woolrich Woolen Mills Explorer Hat

Words

The bucket hat by Woolen Mills is one of the best out there. The shape and size make it easy to wear and they always offer a great variety of fabrics and colours. One of the more interesting versions this spring had slipped under my radar until the recent update by Tres Bien. The floral pattern is subtle enough to wear, and colourful enough to be ideal for the summer.

While spending a little over a week in London, we ran around a lot of the city, had several meetings and appointments and tried to fit in as much of the World Cup as possible. This definitely called for a few cups of coffee along the way. London has a very solid offering on the cafe front, especially in the East End. One of the most convenient and best cups however came from Present. For those who haven't visited the London shop, they have a small set up at the front of the store, which happens to be run by Gwilym Davies, 2009's world barista champion.

Words

The Virgil boot is arguably the best piece of footwear that Visvim have produced in the last decade, but they are often only available at FIL stores. Fortunately these new Moc Toe versions are being offered through Visvim's interesting online retail set up. The boots come in four different colours, have custom Vibram outsoles, and feature hand-sewn uppers and Goodyear welting; they're so supple that socks are not recommended.

Alden Beefroll Loafers

Words

An undeniably American classic, Alden's Beefroll loafer is an ideal piece of summer footwear. Built on their Cape Cod last with a two piece upper and leather lining — the hand sewn moccasin toed shoe is as easy to wear with shorts and a nice boxy oxford (a la Ivy League) as it is with a nice light summer suit. While they look amazing as they are now, he rich burgundy will wear beautifully over time and probably look even better in a few years.

Words

A Bathing Ape have taken significant strides in the last year or two to further their reach and diversity, and one of the highlights has been the URSUS collection headed by Wtaps' Tet. Stripped down classics with subtle Bape references and nods to heritage items have been the foundation of each collection so far. Nothing changes for fall and the simple lookbook imagery highlights this throughout with standout items like the flannel shirting and painter pants.

Words

With an increasing number of stockists around the world, it's great to be able to visit some of the new shops that have embraced the magazine in-store. While in Florence we made time to visit the WP Store. The day after we arrived, Kenny Kusano from Beams had come into town to set up the Beams Plus FW10 window presentation. The timing was perfect for us and we were excited to see Inventory a part of the window. WP also had an extensive selection of Woolrich Woolen Mills as the company has licensed the brand around the world.

Lately I've been trying to think up my perfect pair of shoes. Something I can wear nearly everyday, easily, without thinking about it. Something to go with denim, chinos or even shorts if the occasion should demand. I feel like I've been missing that old reliable friend in the shoe closet that I know I can count on everyday. For some its the desert boot, for some its a canvas sneaker, but I feel that I am currently missing that go-to shoe. I've been coming up with a few ideas that I feel fit my needs, which happen to be made by a certain American shoe maker. There are some details to still decide on, but hopefully it's not too far off.

Preview: Engineered Garments SS11

Words

Just last week we were in Florence seeing some of our favorite collections. Engineered Garments was of course at the top of our list and again did not disappoint. In fact, it exceeded expectations on first viewing and we're quite excited about the spring collection to come. Daiki Suzuki used an interesting and intricate tonal embroidery as the starting point and balanced it with a very wearable military aesthetic and a nice variety of floral patterns. What might sound like his general formula was executed better than ever. To accompany the collection, a great offering of accessories and footwear will also be available. The leather soled boat shoes are sewn by hand in Maine, and the really nice woven leather belts are actually handmade by the lookbook model.
