Eileen Gray by Caroline Constant

Info

Hardcover, 21 x 21cm
256 pages, 222 illustrations
Published by Phaidon

Words

"A contemporary of Pierre Chareau and Charlotte Perriand, Irish-born designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is known primarily for her highly original furniture and interior design but also realized nine buildings in her lifetime and amassed an archive of more than 45 architectural projects. This monograph by Caroline Constant is the first in-depth study of Gray’s entire career, providing a generously illustrated analysis of her early designs as well as her work as an architect beginning in 1926. It draws on a wealth of archival material, plans, drawings, and photographs – including many of Gray’s own – to place her in the context of contemporary movements in design and architecture as well as twentieth-century social and cultural history."

New Balance M998CSEF

01

Images

01. Suede and mesh uppers.
02. Embroidered heel branding.

Words

If I was asked, I'd have to say that the 998 was formerly my favourite New Balance shoe, only to be ousted by all the incredible 990 and 997 models that have come out over the last few years. With this new colourway however, a strong case has been made for a change in sneaker hegemony once again. The impeccably balanced grey and navy option is one of the best I’ve ever seen, and sure to be a hit.

Fergus Feehily – Invincibles

Info

Capital
716 Sacramento Street
San Francisco, CA 94108
December 11 – January 23, 2016

Words

"Fergus Feehily's work can be disarming in its apparent simplicity. Often his paintings are more about what is not there. Behind this spare approach is a will to get at the heart of sensitivities and phenomena that are multi-layered and difficult to address. Feehily's painting practice grows increasingly fluid and promiscuous, utilizing disparate materials such as found objects, photographs, textiles, screws, and pins — even paintings that appear to have no paint involved in their making.

The discreet power of this exhibition proceeds from a desiring touch. Feehily engages vulnerable and precarious depths to control lightness and understand gravity. The exhibition's title, Invincibles, alludes to defiance — something or someone unbeatable or supreme — even while it sneaks up against the word invisible, itself delicate, fragile and modest."

Nousaku S/N Bookend

01

Images

01. Sold individually.
02. Made in Japan.

Words

I've found it surprisingly challenging to track down really nice bookends in the past year or two. They either seem too big or the cost is prohibitive, but this set from Nousaku are some of the best I've seen lately. The shape, size and weight are all ideal, and I like the space within the object itself. While they still aren't especially cheap, they're a functional item, on top of being nice to look at.
