Veilance Ambassadors: Atsushi Nishijima

01

Video

01. Part 1 of 2.

Words

Although our thoughts have increasingly turned to spring, this pair of films promoting the Fall-Winter '15 collection by Arc'teryx Veilance are no less enjoyable. Focused on the New York-based photographer JIMA and shot on the streets that have so frequently featured in his work, the beautiful black and white videos discuss categorisation, the search for character and narrative in every image, and the climatic challenges faced by the city's residents.

JIMA: Website Redesign

01

Image

01. LOITER: For June.

Words

As part of a subtle redesign, New York-based photographer JIMA has just updated his website with a selection of new content. Featuring recent work for Arc'teryx Veilance, Engineered Garments, Popeye, Ginza and our own magazine, alongside imagery from the popular LOITER series, his movie set photography and plenty of archive material, it is well worth exploring. Be sure to have a look at the film section as well, where 4 Parts Dream is a particular highlight from the past.

Words

Many people associate technical fabrics with specific forms of exercise or poor weather conditions, but functional clothing is equally relevant to the requirements of daily life as temperatures rise, particularly in a city environment. When it comes to the latter and the countless considerations involved, few brands succeed in the way that Arc'teryx Veilance does. This season's collection, captured on the streets of New York for our latest online feature, combines innovation and wearability with a well-balanced colour palette.

Jimagraphy Photo Print Pocket T-Shirts

01

Image

01. Five different options.

Words

These T-shirts featuring the New York-based imagery of Japanese photographer, JIMA, would be an outstanding choice for summer. The photos are heavily detailed and make for a unique, high contrast treatment on such a ubiquitous item. The fact that they are also printed over the T-shirt's chest pocket adds a layer of oddity that one has come to expect from a Nepenthes-related product, as well as heightening the texture of an already uncommon design.

Inventory Limited Edition Postcard Set

01

Image

01. Eight piece set.

Words

To coincide with the launch of Issue 12, we have produced a set of eight postcards shot by two of the magazine's contributing photographers, Marcelo Gomes and JIMA. They combine the colourful language of the former with the voyeuristic black and white approach of the latter, reflecting the distinct visual sensibilities of both artists. Released in a limited edition of 400, they are perfectly suited for collecting, displaying or sending a personalized message to a loved one.

Words

Most everyone at Inventory has recently been gorging themselves on JIMA's series of LOITER zines. Printed on an impressively regular basis, in limited numbers, the books offer a look at the citizens of the world and their environs, through the eye of the New York-based photographer. A perpetual street dweller, JIMA captures the unexpected and interesting, and while many know of him via magazine pages or his regular collaborations with Engineered Garments, it is these candid fieldworks that are the cornerstone of his photographic output. Recent releases include a series shot during Fashion Week here in New York, a trip to Tokyo, and time spent in Germany and Portugal. These books are not only affordable, but also a must-have, and are currently available at Nepenthes New York while supplies last.

Workaday for Everyone by JIMA

Words

Shot on the streets of New York City in classic JIMA style, this little EG Workaday feature popped up on the Nepenthes website last week. It probably wasn't intentional, but Down by Law immediately sprang to mind. Click on the link below to see what I mean.

Nepenthes Column: Manhattan by JIMA

Words

New York-based photographer JIMA has been contributing to the Column section on the Nepenthes website since mid-May. Although I'm not able to read his handwritten entries, I've been enjoying the candid imagery that accompanies them, and look forward to seeing more as his Manhattan diary develops.
