INVENTORY: 2009-2016

Words

After seven years, we’ve decided to stop publishing Inventory. We’re extremely grateful to everyone that has supported the magazine by advertising with us or selling it in their stores; to those of you that have purchased a copy; and to the people and brands that have helped to bring our pages to life over the course of thirteen issues.

Making this magazine has been such a valuable experience. The lessons learned, knowledge gained, and relationships cemented could never be replaced, and it’s a journey that I’ll remember forever. Due to the content and the people involved, it’s been a very personal project from the start, and I have to say the biggest thank you to my colleagues along the way. I want to acknowledge the pivotal work of Simon Roe from the beginning to the very end, as well as the roles played by Philip Watts and Owen Parrott, Stephen Mann and Anthony Hooper, Matthew Klassen and Chris Allen. Without your dedication Inventory would not have reached the same heights.

I look back on the legacy of what we’ve created with awe and pride, but the publishing landscape has shifted and it feels like the right time to move on, to conclude things with arguably our best issue, and pursue new challenges and opportunities.

Sincerely,
Ryan Willms

Words

We recently launched our own SoundCloud page and have since posted two mixes put together in-house by different members of the team. The third edition comes from outside of Inventory, courtesy of Vancouver-based producer Bobby Draino. Created under his Journeymann Trax moniker, the disco-influenced collection is perfectly suited to the height of summer, evoking relaxing beach days and cool dips in the water.

Words

To coincide with the launch of Issue 12, we have produced a set of eight postcards shot by two of the magazine's contributing photographers, Marcelo Gomes and JIMA. They combine the colourful language of the former with the voyeuristic black and white approach of the latter, reflecting the distinct visual sensibilities of both artists. Released in a limited edition of 400, they are perfectly suited for collecting, displaying or sending a personalized message to a loved one.

Inventory Store Closures

Words

It's with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of our shops in Vancouver and New York, as well as a narrowing of our online offering. It was a difficult decision, which we laboured over a lot last year, but we have chosen to move away from physical retail so that we can put all of our energy into the magazine and website. These aspects of our business are where we feel the true potential of Inventory lies, and because of this we want to give them the added attention they deserve. As a small team, spread over three countries, it’s often a challenge to achieve everything we want to, and our publication – in print and online – has now grown to a point where the time it requires of us is greater than ever.

It was almost five years ago that we opened our first shop in Vancouver, and nearly two since we expanded to our second location in New York, but in both instances it seems like much longer. We've grown as a retailer, a publication, and a brand in that time, and had the opportunity to meet and work with some wonderful people. We’re proud of the environments we created, the brands we brought together, and those we helped introduce to a wider audience.

Stepping away from retail isn't easy, but it's also liberating to be able to focus our efforts. We anticipate that the magazine and website will flourish, developing in new ways and at a rate that neither were able to in the past. It's certainly not the end; it's the beginning of a new chapter and we hope you'll be just as excited as we are to see what comes next.
