Nepenthes NY

Words

After our appointment with Engineered Garments yesterday, we went down to the Nepenthes shop to have a look around. The shop had recently received quite a bit of Engineered Garments' spring collection and also is currently featuring some really nice art by Hiroshi Kagoshima. While there were a few new pieces I wanted, they just so happened to show up in Vancouver today as well. Our first delivery includes shirting accessories and the tote bags from the Workaday collection.

Some Accessories

01

—01. Hand-sewn bandanas.

Words

Sure, you could maybe do this yourself after collecting some vintage bandanas and finding a seamstress to cut and sew them up for you, but will you? It would be much better to just purchase the finished article from Nepenthes NY. The unique accessories are simple in concept, but add a nice bit of texture and colour to an outfit.

Nepenthes Braided Ring Belt

01

Images

—01. Available in brown and black.

Words

A braided ring belt has been on my mind for a little while but I couldn't recall ever actually seeing one, until today. It looks like Nepenthes has again answered the call and have done a nice version in brown leather with antiqued hardware. It's definitely a good looking belt and something I could see myself wearing pretty regularly.

Nepenthes Melange Socks

Words

Nepenthes do a lot of things right, at least in my opinion. One of the constants is their melange socks which they seem to do all year round. Fortunately with the opening of the Nepenthes store in New York this fall, they might actually be easy to purchase in the near future.

Nepenthes Fishing Oxfords

Details

Words

The ripple sole oxford is a shoe that I've had a bit of a crush on for a few seasons now. New versions from Yuketen and Russell Moccasin, and old factory samples from Alden offer a really unique and great looking option. Nepenthes, however, are arguably the masters of creatively interpreting American products for the Japanese market. This might just be another case of what they do best, because I don't see anybody around these parts wearing the ripple sole oxford - that's a challenge.

Engineered Garments Workaday Tote

Words

Two things that I really like, Engineered Garments and canvas bags. The Workaday canvas collection has been around for seasons now but the tote bag continues to elude me. It's mostly the price point of around $225 that has kept me from buying it, but it's always on my mind and at the top of my list. The Workaday range from Engineered Garments is probably my favorite capsule collection. It consists of great products across the board, and this tote bag is one of my favorites. I will definitely purchase it one of these days, but in the meantime you will also catch a glimpse of it in our spring issue of Inventory as well.

Nepenthes Hathorn Boot

hathorn It's been almost a year since we first mentioned these boots from Nepenthes but they're back. This time around in a beautiful smooth leather. I don't know what it is about deep chestnut brown coloured leather on footwear but it has me swooning every time. I've always been a fan of the Hathorn thanks to it's simple three-piece upper and sleek silhouette and I've been entertaining the thought of a lower cut boot more and more lately. I think combined with the classic Vibram sole the smooth oxford boot has a great contrast about it that can be worn across any number of different styles. The gold eyelets and multi-coloured laces offer that much more detail. Taking inspiration from a certain 100 poster around here, I think with some cropped pants and  maybe even a pair of Fair Isle socks you'd be well on your way to a great looking autumn look. hathorn1

Look | 100 Posts

century-look-siIn the grand scheme of things it's a fairly minor milestone but this is my 100th post. With that in mind, I thought I'd put together an outfit using some of the things I've written about over the last few months. Although some of them are no longer available, they should still provide plenty of inspiration. Looking back, there was any number of possibilities but I particularly like the way these items interact. There might be a variety of colours and textures involved but there's a simplicity about their combination. It's an outfit that very much reflects my own personal taste and in keeping with the overall tone of h(y)r, I've always written about things I love. I've tried to provide as much depth and personal insight as possible, focusing on things I have direct experience of or a genuine admiration for. I hope you've enjoyed my contributions so far. I really appreciate all the comments and encouragement, and I'd like to thank Ryan and Owen for asking me to be a part of what they've created.
