Openhouse Magazine Issue 2

01

Image

—01. Published twice a year.

Words

Openhouse is a new magazine rooted in the idea of private spaces functioning in some public way. Whether it be a studio, gallery or showroom, often in a house or apartment – or really any combination thereof. Its second issue features insightful glimpses into the Freunde von Freunden Apartment in Berlin and Philip Johnson’s Glass House in Connecticut, as well as several other cleanly and brightly photographed offices and homes that are utilized for intriguing purposes. With the magazine turning up in more shops, it's a publication to keep an eye out for.

Our editor-in-chief, Ryan Willms, was recently profiled on the beautifully exhibited interiors website, Freunde von Freunden. As part of an ongoing series with Vitra, the feature showcases Willms’ home, which reflects a cohesive sense of design that utilizes a number of their pieces alongside Alvar Aalto designed Artek furniture, Vitsoe 606 shelving, and a variety of other items that are personal to him. On top of the intimate view of his home, he also offers a glimpse into some his favourite activities and places to visit in Vancouver.

Words

Vitra had produced this hardcover book in 2007 for celebration of Charles Eames 100th birthday. I hadn't come across it until recently, but it features a nice variety of images from the Eames work, along with texts explaining some of the processess and concepts. The book mainly focuses on furniture design, which the Eames couple are best known for.
