Unearthed: Duxbak Shooting Jacket

01

Images

Words

Maybe it's something about the cooler damp weather that's blown in over the last couple of days, but two thoughts have recently been preying on my mind. The first is adding an extra layer, as the temperature slowly starts to drop, and the second is an early morning wonder around the flea markets on the weekend. I'm lucky enough to live blocks from one, but during the summer months the harsh sun and shadeless asphalt are often a little too much for me to take for long periods of time. Hunting for diamonds-in-the-rough is not particularly a speciality of mine, which is why I'm happy to rely on updates from the always excellent Ready 4 The House to get my inspiration levels raised. The Duxbak shooting jacket above, looks to be exactly what we're all hoping to unearth when we're on the hunt: a well fitting, classic piece in excellent, or at least interesting, condition.

Arc'teryx Veilance Fall 2011

Words

"Just as Arc’teryx redefined outerwear for extreme conditions with absolute dedication and technical innovation, their Veilance line channels that same groundbreaking spirit with added elegance for an urban environment to elevate expectations of what men’s apparel can be. For Fall 2011, warm but unobtrusive linings are present in a selection of outerwear designs. Silhouettes in the collection remain progressive, supported by advanced materials and intelligent fabrications."

It's rare to be able to stand behind a product unequivocally, but in my opinion, Veilance is that kind of product. It is expensive, but it's also the absolute pinnacle of modern technical outerwear, and once you've worn one of these pieces, particularly in adverse weather, it's difficult to consider anything else.

Tangiers by Pablo Delfos

Words

These photographs by Pablo Delfos, taken in the city of Tangiers in the North African country of Morocco, are a goldmine for reference and inspiration. Tangiers has, in the past, been both a getaway and a retreat to the likes of William S. Burroughs, Bryon Gysin, and Alan Ginsberg, and like their literary counterparts the men in these photographs have developed a style for themselves, that is neither derivative of another nor contrived in any way.

Crescent Down Works at The Bureau

—02. Navy.

Words

The Bureau have recently received their first delivery of Crescent Down Works for Fall. The pop of colour provided by the burgundy interiors is a nice addition to their classic styles this season, and as Ryan mentioned yesterday: it's hard to go wrong with navy or olive at any time of year. I've personally always liked the Down Shirt, finding it a nice balance between a traditional outerwear piece and a classic over shirt; my preferred Fall layer. Both these styles however look more than adequate for the impending New York winter; a brutality that feels closer to arrival as each day passes.

Reef Imaginarium

Words

According to Reef photographer Chris Straley, “Our concept isn’t 100 percent original, as underwater photography has been seen before, but we wanted an organic, raw feeling. We didn’t want to do helicopters or any of that shit because it doesn’t fit with our brand direction. We’ve seen so many rad below-the-surface photos that guys like Brian Bielmann have shot, and that gave us the idea for an underlying theme—which is to try and portray what a reef would have seen throughout the years since the creation of surfing.”

Look: Fall's Coming

Words

It's now the second week of September and although its still pretty warm in Vancouver, I can't help but look forward to some early fall attire. The knitwear from Margaret Howell, oxford shirts, fatigue pants and Red Wings all feel like they are ready for some wear. No matter the season however, olives, blues and suedes seem to be a continuous thread. They always seem to work well together, and especially when a couple more layers are involved.

Margaret Howell's Ten Best Product Designs

01

Words

Well known for both her understated and exceptional taste, Margaret Howell recently picked her top ten product designs for The Observer newspaper. Some you might guess, others you most certainly won't. Her tenth pick, for example, is Motorway Signs:

"These are so familiar that no one notices how clever they really are. They convey important information quickly, unambiguously and without distraction to motorists travelling at speed. This demands expertise in perception and information processing, but the result is anything but academic, combining shape, type and symbol with simplicity and style. They look as good today as they did 50 years ago and have made motorway travelling safer and easier for millions. It is one of the hardest tasks to be simple. And it’s a triumph."
