Buying: Spring-Summer '11

Words

While we are patiently awaiting our first fall-winter deliveries, Simon and I are in New York finishing up our buying for next spring. Our brand list is small and we plan to keep the selection of items we buy well edited and curated in a way that compliments our brand as well as our own personal tastes. Daiki Suzuki is one of the people who makes this quite difficult as the collection is so large and it's one we're particularly fond of. We were fortunate enough to see the Engineered Garments SS11 offering in Florence last month and again in New York yesterday. We've made our final edit, and as fall approaches, we're already excited for next spring.

Band of Outsiders Fall Shirting

01

Images

—01. Faded black and red stripes
—02. Blue woven end on end fabric

Words

Band of Outsiders' Fall goods have started arriving in shops and as to be expected, the shirting looks good. The backbone of the brand has always been their simple, well fitting shirts in nice colours, interesting patterns and top quality materials. South Willard in LA has just received some of these shirts and there are a handful of perfectly faded stripes and muted colours that may well be meant for the Fall but feel just right for right now.

Diemme

Words

There are a couple companies that make classic looking hiking boots but often they aren't that easy to get or they are really heavy - because they are made for hiking or climbing. Diemme has managed to slim down the classic silhouette, add the lightweight Vibram sole and offer a nice looking boot that is ideal for wearing in the city and on the trails if need be - maybe stick to the path however. They are just starting to release in North America this fall at select shops. They will also be showing the collection in New York this week.

Words

Albam has been one of the biggest supporters and sellers of our magazine and it's been great to work with the company over the last year. While they've helped spread our product, they have grown at a tremendous rate themselves over the last 12 months. Since I met James and the crew last summer, they've added two more shops and a number of new products. On my recent visit to London I was able to see the Spitalfields shop and quite liked the new space. I would have to say it's my favorite Albam shop of the three locations and it was nice to see the increasingly nice selection of print alongside the increasingly good offering of soft goods.

Mister Freedom x Sugar Cane Fall 2010

01

Images

—01. MF "CALIFORNIAN" Lot 54 Patches
—02. Mariniere Jersey layered with CPO shirts
—03. MFSC Fall '10

Words

Mister Freedom's upcoming collection with Tokyo's Sugar Cane sees the merger of the two concepts of the past. MFSC Fall '10 is a mix of the “Naval Clothing Tailor” and “Speed Safe Clothing” collections. With a few returning classics like the N1-H Deck jacket and Rider's Dungarees, the range also adds a few new styles. As usual, the most impressive aspect of the garments is the materials. Beautiful 10oz midnight indigo twill on the CPO, nice french terry henleys and 12oz deadstock selvedge denim on 5-pocket jeans. The collection might seem quite diverse stylistically but each individual piece is loaded with great detail and can be worn with any other for any number of great looks. Look for deliveries come September.

Words

Heller's Cafe has had a large impact on North American brands as one of the leading vintage showrooms in the US. Designers, directors and creatives have been making the trip out to Seattle for years to visit the acclaimed showroom and to get inspired by what Larry has found. More recently, Heller's Cafe have been collaborating with Japan's Warehouse on a number of items to build up what is one of the more interesting vintage inspired collections available. This summer the two brands produced these 'Side Buckle Work Pants' in a special wash for J.Crew. The pants are limited to 18 pairs and will be available at J.Crew in New York as of today.

Inspiration: Super Pay Day Jacket

01

Images

Words

It's always interesting to see what garments spark a certain inspiration for designers. This mid-30s Pay Day jacket was one of those items for Takeshi Ohfuchi of Post Overalls. The details in the garment from the different types of stitching to the first use of Sanforized denim cotton to the natural wear and pocket details all contributed to the way he sees clothing today. If it now looks familiar, it's because its a strong reference point for Takeshi's current Engineer's jacket in the Post Overalls collection.

Want: Converse Addict Low

01

Images

—01. Simple colorway, goes with everything and will last.

Words

The white canvas sneaker is and has always been a fairly important item to have on a day to day basis, especially during the summer. I like it with chinos, denim and shorts so pretty much all the bases are covered. Lately my Vans have taken a fair beating and I have been looking for something to step in and shoulder some of the weight. Converse is an obvious choice but I've never really worn All Stars and have been wanting something slightly different. I've heard good reviews of the Converse Addict range that released in Japan last year and have been trolling eBay and Yahoo auctions lately for the low cut white canvas version. The Vibram sole, extra cushioning and slightly higher rand definitely have me close to pulling the trigger.
