Pace Gallery Summer Group Show

Info

Pace Gallery
32 East 57th Street
New York, NY 10022
July 15 – August 21, 2015

Words

Pace's uptown New York location is currently hosting an impressive group show, featuring an array of revered figures. With an emphasis on somewhat smaller works, the exhibition juxtaposes the likes of Alexander Calder, Sol Lewitt, Robert Mangold and Richard Tuttle from the gallery's own stable, with Jackson Pollock and Fernand Léger, to create an engaging examination of modern artistic practice.

Red Wing Style No. 9197: 6-Inch Postman

01

Image

01. Black Chaparral leather.

Words

This newly designed style based on Red Wing's ever-popular Postman Oxford has just been released at a handful of retailers. Favoured by mail carriers and policemen for its comfort and durability, the original 101 model debuted in 1954 and went on to become one of the best selling shoes in the brand's history. The 9197 takes this reference and applies it to a 6-inch boot. The cushion crepe wedge sole and goodyear welt construction are retained, but the added ankle coverage makes for a unique take on a time-tested Red Wing classic.

Words

Goodhood in London have recently received a selection of new items from Forty Percents Against Rights. The offering includes some light outerwear, the usual array of graphic T-shirts and sweatshirts with unexpected slogans printed in black and white, and an all-season necessity for more domesticated media guerrillas: an oven mitt.

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star II

01

Image

01. Also available in blue.

Words

It's been a long time coming, but Converse have finally updated one of the most iconic shoes ever made. In production since 1917, the Chuck Taylor has become a part of most people's lives in one way or another. This summer the US sneaker brand have appointed the model with a Lunarlon sockliner, micro-suede interior, premium canvas construction and a padded non-slip tongue. The aesthetic of the shoe remains relatively unchanged, with the subtle injections of innovation somewhat hidden within. While I haven't tried a pair on yet, it seems as though the upgrade has been a successful one.

Music comes courtesy of John Stammers and Noncollective, while Rochelle Canteen is taking lunch and dinner reservations, as well as serving a selection of food and drink from a separate stall on the lawn. The first one turned out to be the perfect start to the weekend, and with the weather looking good this promises to be an equally enjoyable day.

Book/Shop LBR-2 Book Bench

01

Image

01. Solid ash.

Words

I have no idea how I missed the release of the outstanding LBR-2 Book Bench back in March, but better late than never is certainly an adage that applies to these kind of things. Book/Shop does a great job of dreaming up simple wooden furniture designs that integrate beautifully with your book collection and its surroundings. Made from a solid piece of FSC-certified lumber that is planed down and joined to its legs with finger joints, the LBR-2 comes in both walnut and ash versions which, to their aesthetic benefit, forego the use of nails and screws completely.

Sam Prekop – The Republic

01

Image

01. Thrill 384.

Words

For anyone familiar with Sam Prekop’s work as part of the seminal post-rock group, The Sea and Cake, this record may seem like a bit of a departure. Produced entirely at home, it sees the American musician trading his customarily crystalline guitar sound for that of modular synthesizers. The first half of The Republic features tracks composed to accompany a video installation by David Hartt, while the second half is built around ideas that worked best on their own. The album essentially picks up where Prekop's previous solo effort, Old Punch Card, left off in 2010. This time though the tones are hazier and less glitchy, making for a more minimalist and ambient listen with some decidedly rhythmic patterns laid beneath. Prekop's output, alone and as part of The Sea and Cake, is sophisticated and precise, encapsulating what the Thrill Jockey sound is all about.
