Gee Vaucher – Crass Art and Other Pre Post-Modernist Monsters

01

Image

01. Published by AK Press, 1999.

Words

Whether or not you’re a fan of Crass, their album artwork and accompanying imagery is incredible; sublimely dark, thoughtful, and often uncomfortable. Frequently attacking humanity's cultural reliance on war, religion and consumerism, London-born artist Gee Vaucher is responsible for the group's idiosyncratic visuals. This rare first edition collects paintings, illustrations and collages from 1961 to 1997, as well as a selection of her work for the politically charged UK punk band.

The Mirror at the Cinematheque

Info

Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky
USSR, 1974
106 minutes, 35mm

Words

"Tarkovsky’s visually-sumptuous fourth feature is the great director’s most personal and poetic (and Proustian) film. The Mirror offers an idiosyncratic history of 20th century Russia, in the form of a poet’s fragmented reflections on three generations of his family.” This presentation is set to be a real treat and couldn’t be better timed, as I’ve been on a bit of a Tarkovsky kick of late and this is a film I have yet to see. Check it out this weekend if you’re in Vancouver.

Susan Cianciolo at Bridget Donahue

Info

Bridget Donahue
99 Bowery, 2nd Floor
New York, NY 10002
Wednesday – Sunday, 12-6pm
May 17 – July 5, 2015

Words

Formally of Gavin Brown's Enterprise, Bridget Donahue opened her namesake gallery earlier this year, in a beautiful and raw second floor space on the Bowery. The gallery's second solo show opened this past weekend, and features new works from multi-media artist and designer Susan Cianciolo. The show entitled if God COMes to visit You, HOW will you know? (the great tetrahedral kite), offers an unprecedented look at the work of an artist who moves between disciplines and form – from the construction and deconstruction of clothing, to performance and filmmaking. Among other works, the exhibition features a number of small "kits" that have been prepared by the artist; scrapbook-like boxes that have been reworked and painted, containing two decades worth of torn apart clothing, soft sculpture, drawings, paintings, and collage. Various events and performances are scheduled throughout the duration of the show, which runs until July, including a presentation of the artist's early films at Anthology Film Archives. An exhibition catalog has also been produced by the Zurich-based publishing house Nieves, alongside a series of posters designed by Harsh Patel.

Cutler and Gross D-Frame Acetate Sunglasses

01

Image

01. Grey acetate with green lenses.

Words

Time and time again, sunglasses made by the UK-based eyewear company Cutler and Gross have me debating whether or not I need an upgrade. While the answer is logically no, the incredibly classic styles always cause me to wrestle with my more impetuous side. I'm especially drawn to this D-Frame model: Italian-made, distinctive, and sure to stand the test of time.

Post Overalls Indigo Sheeting Army Shirt-R

01

Image

01. Boxy fit.

Words

My love of pullover shirting and military wear has elicited numerous recommendations of the classic two-pocket army shirt over the years. I’m sure most were advocating the iconic denim fabric work shirt, but Post Overalls always makes one of the best iterations for summer. I can’t help debating between an original and the Army Shirt-R every season, but this rich, indigo-dyed cotton sheeting version might see me choosing the latter.

Comme des Garçons Homme Dyed Cotton Canvas Sneaker

01

Image

01. Black.

Words

This season Comme des Garçons Homme have taken the classic All-Star silhouette and dyed the entire shoe in a selection of different colours. The black version looks best in my opinion, but it's an easy to wear summer sneaker no matter which option you prefer.
