Larry Bell 2D-3D: Glass & Vapor

Info

White Cube Mason's Yard
25-26 Mason's Yard
London SW1Y 6BU
July 17 – September 26, 2015

Words

White Cube gallery in London has recently opened its fourth solo show centred around Larry Bell, an artist widely associated with the California ‘Light and Space’ movement. A selection of the process-based works that have come to define Bell's stylistic signature are on display, ranging from three early coated glass installations to more recent ‘Vapor Drawings’ on paper. The newest pieces, produced in 2014, come in the form of his ‘Light Knot’ sculptures that are made from “pliable, vacuum coated, curvaceously-shaped sheets of polyester film” and suspended in transparent cases. This exhibition begs to be seen in person, addressing the apparent concerns with light’s relation to an intensely treated surface and what phenomena that process conjures.

Spalwart Special Mid

01

Image

01. Cotton canvas and rubber.

Words

There is such an abundance of white canvas sneakers available that unless you’re absolutely committed to wearing one style, choosing between them is very difficult. I've seen an array of Spalwart footwear as the brand's profile has risen over the last few seasons, but I don’t often come across this straightforward monochromatic mid model. Now that they’re firmly in my mind, it would be hard for me to consider other options as this pair offers everything one might want, right down to being produced with the original 1950s moulds and machinery.

Maruhiro Flagship Store

01. Concrete-filled ceramic floor.

Words

Maruhiro, producer of the outstanding Hasami ceramics line, recently commissioned designer Yusuke Seki to overhaul their flagship store in Japan's Nagasaki prefecture. The result owes a significant debt to the concept of monohara, the kiln-side pits used for the disposal of imperfect and broken pieces pulled from the fire. Rather than adhering to this traditional practice, 25,000 flawed items were assembled from numerous factories in the area, filled with concrete, and layered to form a jaw-dropping elevated floor. This inventive use of would-be waste creates a striking balance between the locale’s rich history and the company’s preeminent place in contemporary Japanese ceramics.

Visvim Nomad Jacket 2.5L

01. Gore-Tex.

Words

While I greatly appreciate the care and attention put into every Visvim collection, there is often one piece that jumps out more than all the others, seeming like it would slide right into a vacant space in my closet. This season that would have to the be the Nomad Jacket. The brand's staple parka looks particularly good in this vivid red colour, and the Gore-Tex shell, button-up storm flap, and drawstring hood with a fold-out brim would make it very useful in the coming months when sunshine turns to rain.

Words

Pace's uptown New York location is currently hosting an impressive group show, featuring an array of revered figures. With an emphasis on somewhat smaller works, the exhibition juxtaposes the likes of Alexander Calder, Sol Lewitt, Robert Mangold and Richard Tuttle from the gallery's own stable, with Jackson Pollock and Fernand Léger, to create an engaging examination of modern artistic practice.
