Patrik Ervell Spring Items

I've been a fan of Patrik Ervell's collections since I first saw them. The simplicity of most of the products combined with nice fabrics and a very restrained design always appealed to me. I've also always like blue and wearing multiple shades of it, so Ervell's collections have always been nice to look at on that tonal level as well. This spring is no different, simple shirting, jackets and chinos round off some of my favorite pieces.

Sartorialude / New York

nyMr. Schuman has been a busy guy this past season, making his rounds to the fashion capitals of the western world to take pictures of people who dress well. Sounds like a tough job doesn't it? There is now a little compilation of his top 'pics' from the off-the-runway New York scene on mens.style.com. There are definitely some good looking people wearing some good looking clothes. I seem to like the same colors, materials and general style with my top picks of the Sartorialist's top pics. Of these four, my favorites are the top two images. I love the varsity cardigan and aviator glasses a lot. The other fellow has a nice grasp of the shrunken outfit look and I really like the hint of plaid from the inside of his jacket. Kanye and a couple uber RL guys round out my top choices - really enjoying Kanye's gloves.

Patrik Ervell FW09

patrik-ervell-1I really love Patrik Ervell's fall collection, the good parts. There are definitely a lot of pieces that aren't for me. A lot of the nylon, track jacket, shiny pieces just aren't for me. But when it comes to the speckled wool blazers, coats and knit sweaters, I'm in love. After looking through his collection in New York a couple weeks ago I knew it was going to be one of my favorites for fall. I had also known there would be a Common Projects collaboration but this is my first time seeing it. The lace-less officer shoe looks pretty great in the great in white and grey and compliments the collection really well. For me the wool over coat, sport coat pants and knits are the top picks and I am going to start saving up now. Yes he used a couple females for his mens show, yes they looked good, and yes I still want the pieces. Thanks to Mens.style for the images. pe-common-projects patrik-ervell-2 patrik-ervell-3

Patrik Ervell Spring Items

pe-ss09Patrik Ervell might be my favorite collections I don't own anything from. Mostly because I have a really hard time finding the items I want. In Vancouver the only retailer is big ol' Holt Renfrew, and needless to say their buying and customer experience are far from what I'm looking for. Otherwise there are only a handful of online retailers like Tres Bien and South Willard, where these items are available. Now the prices on Mr. Ervell's collection are not too low, but they are beautiful. These spring items are some of the basics and most classic items he does really well. The chambray with the club collar is a great looking shirt that you can wear pretty much any time. Both sweaters look soft and very wearable, great colors for the spring. Patrik Ervell's fall collection is one of the nicest I've seen as well through the last month or two of tradeshows and showrooms. I hope that the collection gets picked up a bit more and represented a bit better, both for Patrik, and for my closet's sake.

Spring Buyers Guide: 8/64

72Well I just finished clicking through the highly extensive Buyers Guide for Spring 09 put together by Mens.Style.com and several of the top stores in the USA, from big to small. First off I would like to say thanks to Steven Torres for taking a lot of really nice product shots, along with the rest of team over there. It was well done for the most part. I guess my bone picking is more directed to the buyers featured in the article. Now I'm not running a store, not trying to pump up my own zebra pattern collaboration or buying for a huge department store, so my opinion is just that, my opinion. I do feel like I have a pretty good idea of what looks good and what I might actually think about buying. No I'm not in a huff because nobody picked anything by Engineered Garments. But I went through the whole feature and only pulled 8 out of the 60-something products. For the most part it was the smaller shops that had the items I liked, unsurprisingly. Odin, Blackbird, South Willard, Opening Ceremony and Jake all came through with an item or two. So what are the top picks that will save you clicking your mouse 73+ times? Woolrich Woolen Mills Upland jacket, Patrik Ervell grey blazer, Kolor double breasted blazer, Common Projects canvas safari boots, Quoddy blutchers, Our Legacy cable knit, Band of Outsiders plaid shorts and the blue corduroy YSL shorts. There you go, that's all you need this spring, notice how they all even look good together. ------------ Turns out Ryan and I wrote a post on the same thing at the same time, so for what it's worth here's how I feel about it. GQ's buyers guides are generally good. Their shop selection is good, each owner/buyer's picks are usually pretty good and it's always interesting to hear their forecasts. However, their latest installment for Spring is not bad, but slightly frustrating. Everyone knows the state of the economy, so I agree with quotes like these: "Spring 2009 is the next stage in the evolution of the modern, style-conscious man's wardrobe, and one that focuses on investment pieces." and, "...invest in must-have fashion that is memorable and adds value." They make sense, we as consumers should be buying smarter. Which is why I'm confused as to how one could consider a $275 deconstructed sweater (aka 2 sweaters cut in half and sewn back together) or a $1,715 blazer with paint splattered on it a good wardrobe investment. Unfortunately there are a handful of other not so great picks. I get that the guide is a marketing tool for these stores but it's not that hard to select items for promotion that are actually smart buys; just like most of the independent boutiques did. In addition to the stuff above, I don't mind the look of the Acne x Lanvin overcoat (but denim?) and the Marc Jacobs bomber (I'd rather a Baracuta though) for those inevitable spring showers. I'll give them half a point each to make it 9/64. -OP

Something in Swedish: Industribolaget

industribolagetI have no idea what anything on this blog says but the outfits are great. Sam runs the blog from in Sweden but started in while attending school in the US. He thought the style blogs weren't hitting the mark back in his homeland so he decided to contribute to the cause. Now he's working on building the site in interesting directions and sounds pretty optimistic. I don't really love to send people away to other blogs all that much but since I don't usually put together outfits and Sam is doing a great job of it, I thought I would share the inspiration. I would say I am down with about 96% of the pieces and outfits he picks for the looks. I think the text covers some of the inspiration and idea behind the look, maybe with enough of a push, he might start writing a little English on there for us. I really like these two looks I choose but I particularly love the Patrik Ervell shirt in the latest outfit, so go have a look.
