Runner's Journal: The Marathon

Words

Today is the day; for the first time I'll embark on a nonstop 42.2km (26.3 mile) run and hopefully finish in less than three hours. While my Runner's Journal posts haven't been especially regular, luckily my training has. Over the past few months, work has been all-consuming, nearly every day of the week. My only real respite has been running, allowing me the chance to clear my mind and achieve some temporary peace.

01. Foreword by Kim Gordon, afterword by Natasha Lyonne.

Words

The photo book, Chloë Sevigny, has just been released by the much revered Rizzoli publishing house. This hardcover volume features photos of everyone’s favourite It girl throughout the sartorial arc of her career, starting in the ‘90s when she epitomized the downtown NYC skater girl look, right through to her current iteration of trendsetting: high fashion Hollywood actress. "The book includes early personal photos of Chloë taken by her high school friends; film stills; modeling appearances for brands such as Miu Miu and Chloé; magazine editorials for Purple, i-D, and The Face by top photographers such as Mark Borthwick, Terry Richardson, and Juergen Teller; and homages by artists such as Elizabeth Peyton and Karen Kilimnik. Additionally, Sevigny shares some of her treasured personal memorabilia, such as casting fliers, Polaroids, zines, and pages from her day planners.” Chloë Sevigny is a must for die-hard fans and those with an interest in contemporary fashion, alike.

01. Eight piece set.

Words

To coincide with the launch of Issue 12, we have produced a set of eight postcards shot by two of the magazine's contributing photographers, Marcelo Gomes and JIMA. They combine the colourful language of the former with the voyeuristic black and white approach of the latter, reflecting the distinct visual sensibilities of both artists. Released in a limited edition of 400, they are perfectly suited for collecting, displaying or sending a personalized message to a loved one.

Words

This season Japanese brand Wacko Maria have produced a special Jim Jarmusch collection. I'm a fan of the brand and an even bigger fan of the filmmaker, so the project was a pleasant surprise when I discovered it in the latest issue of Grind. Comprising a printed aloha shirt and a handful of T-shirts, the small range is now available from select retailers.

Words

Nina Beier has been one of my favourite artists since I saw her mind-blowing show at Yerba Buena Arts in San Francisco about five years ago. Her latest work is now on view at New York powerhouse Metro Pictures, and it might be her best showing yet. The explanations for the pieces are light, and really, there is no explanation necessary. That's not because they are self-explanatory, it's because they are so viscerally attractive that you won't need any sort of in-depth knowledge to appreciate them.

Sedate Stripe BD LS Long Shirt

01

Images

01. Elongated body.
02. Made in Japan.

Words

Even by Japanese standards, Sedate flies under the radar. They are part of an unofficial group of brands that seem to take inspiration from the 1980s club scene in New York and LA. This shirt is a prime example; it would fit seamlessly into any photograph taken at the Mudd Club.

Beirut-born photographer Toufic Beyhum has been visiting the Brixton Masjid for the past year to capture the footwear worn by young Muslims for Friday prayers. The subsequent images have a beautifully contemporary feel, bringing a familiar sight for many Londoners to much a wider audience.
